A 52-year-old white guy who works for a software company and has a knitted Stitch headcover with a giant pom pom on his driver. Totally predictable, right? But my three wood cover is made by a Portland based streetwear clothing + accessory label inspired by municipal golf culture. When I got my current bag a few years ago, I fell down a rabbit hole looking for new headcovers. I’m not sure exactly how I stumbled upon Muni Kids, but as a former caddy and someone who grew up on Jersey Shore munis, the idea of supporting other guys who came up playing public courses really resonated with me.
I’m not going to claim that I have a ton in common with Max Reinland; he’s younger, better looking, a better golfer, and he’s much cooler than me. But we both came from similar places golf-wise, even if we grew up on opposite ends of the continent and in different decades. Old school for him is Lil Wayne. Old school for me is Husker Du. Muni Kids aims to make golf “inclusive not exclusive” – and that speaks to me.
As for the headcover itself, the waterproof canvas is heavy and extremely high quality. The fleece lining is soft and keeps your woods nice and safe. And I get compliments on it wherever I go. It’s not quite one of a kind, but it’s definitely an original. If the bandana print doesn’t do it for you, they have tons of other styles. Depending upon the colorway of my next bag, I could be going with their take on Van Gogh’s Starry Night. Or the Warhol-inspired print of Fred Couples. Or maybe the mac and cheese. The point is, they have tons of different designs. If you can’t find anything there, check out Max’s other company, Reinland Golf Co. Their pricing is so much better than comparable goods from bougier companies (approximately 30% less). And don’t sleep on their other offerings – I have the Everywhere t-shirt in Mets blue and orange and the Logo Dad Hat in black.
If the Muni Kids bandana headcover were playing a match against its closest competitor, it would close the match out on the 17th with a 2&1 win. And it would look good doing it.
